Frankfurt Drafting School

This week we took part in the Drafting School in Frankfurt. We came to the IG-Farben building of the Goethe-University and were pleasantly welcomed by the organizers. Teams from different cities participated in the 10thAnnual Frankfurt Drafting School. On the first day, we have heard a lecture on the  CISG with Prof. Huber from Mainz. He gave us helpful case examples and told us about his experience as arbitrator in Vienna. On the second day, there was a workshop on drafting a memorandum. We got a deep insight on how to write a persuasive memorandum. The lecturers gave us usable hints to effectively structure our arguments to guide the reader. The last day was a practical day. We received the 16th Moot case and structured our arguments to represent claimant in the case. After it, we discussed two of the results in the plenum.
It was a great experience to participate in the Frankfurt Drafting School. We met other Moot Teams, learned a lot about Arbitration and we came closer as a team.

Field Trip

On the 21st September 2014 the JLU Moot Team went for a field trip in Marburg, which was planned by the coaches so we could spend some time together in order to know each other better. During our day in Marburg, we had to accomplish some tasks as a group. From the eight tasks settled by our coaches, we were able to accomplish six. Unfortunately, the weather was not good and didn’t help us, but we could also get a little warm when we had lunch at Early’s and later had a pie at Café Vetter. Most of all, I believe we accomplished the main task: to get to know each other better. We, for the first time, talked more about ourselves and about our impressions on the Moot until now, and about our feelings concerning it.

05th and 06th September - Gießener Team Arbitration Workshop

This was the project we had to deal with in the last week. Unfortunately, the Düsseldorf International Arbitration School did not take place in 2014, which is the reason why we had to do our own Arbitration Workshop. It is also out of question that we have to be experts in ICC, UNCITRAL Model Law, NYC and CISG before the Moot case comes out in October! Our coaches gave us four topics, which we had to prepare for the Workshop. We worked in pairs and used the books in our Moot room for preparation. It was a great possibility to get an insight in the literature, which we will have to use for our Memorandum. After some days researching on the internet, leafing through many books and writing the hand out, we finally had to present it. It up to us how we would like to present our topics, e.g. Julian and Claudia used PowerPoint, whereas Kai and I decided to create a small questionnaire for our listeners. So finally, we had our own Arbitration Workshop and we are very proud of it! We all notice that the Moot is “real”; the date of release of the case comes closer!

25th August 2014 - First meeting in the Moot Room

On the 25th of August 2014 the Moot team of the JLU had its first official meeting in the moot room. It was  also the first time we met our fourth and last team member Claudia. So from now on, the family can be described as complete. To get to know each other, we basically introduced ourselves to each other by telling who we are, where we are from and why we wanted to participate in the Moot. After some decisions about future events, like the Frankfurt Drafting School, the coaches told us the most important principles to be successful as a team: availability, communication, respect, responsibility and organization. Good teamwork is also one of the most important keys to success in this competition.
In short: There is no “I” in team. This means that from now on we no longer exist as individuals but as a team that hopes to achieve much in this Moot.

First Moot-Task!

Hey readers,
we got our first Moot-task and started working!

It was the first time we came in close contact with Arbitration.
We researched, discussed and wrote our first memorandum.
It was a lot of work, but also interesting and a view of what will come!

On the left picture you can see the task and the front of the case. On the right picture you can see Julian and me at work.

Best wishes,

Meeting with eBusiness Lotse Mittelhessen

Hey readers!

Today we had our first meeting with a sponsor. The sponsor is called eBusiness Lotse Mittelhessen. It is a project of the THM. At 10 AM we came to their office. They were interested in Arbitration and we introduced the Willem C. Vis Moot. They have much experience and knowledge about marketing and internet working. We talked 2 hours about our blog and how we could improve our presence in social network. They gave us information and hints. We arranged to stay in contact and and talked about a common event. At the end of the meeting we got some Merchandising stuff. It was a very successful day for our team.

First meeting !

Dear readers !
Last week we had our first meeting. We met for a drink in the "Nachos-Bar" in front of our university. I can tell you, it was very exciting for us new mooties, because we did not know each other !
The ex-mooties and our coaches Deborah and Marius joined us, too.

Unfortunately our team is still not complete. The fourth member should either be a Brazilian student or a girl from our university.

So first of all, we introduced ourselves. We told about who we are, what our reason was to participate in the Moot and what our expectations are.

After that we had the opportunity to ask everything what was in our minds. The ex-mooties Marius, Jeannine, Clovis and Marjorie answered all questions and told us about their experiences with the Moot 2013/2014. Here is a very detailed report of their moot activities.

Another point we discussed, and probably the most important of this evening, was the sponsor letter. For being successful in the finals in Vienna we need to take part in many Pre-Moots. But these Pre-Moots are expensive, that is why our team is dependent on financial support. So we already received our first task to write a good sponsor letter, deadline is the 04.07.2014.
At this point our idea to create a blog developed, too. It is not just an opportunity to document our activities, but also to give our sponsors and team members all over the world a small view in our work.

After 2 hours of lively exchanges our first meeting was over and I was gone home full of thoughts and imprints in my mind. The expectations of what will come in the next months rise !

As a recommendation of Deborah and Marius, we should read this book, which gives a small overview about the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.

Best wishes, Daria Michel
